Inclusive communication is much more than a trend; it is a fundamental requirement for effective interaction between public administrations and the reference community as a whole. Using inclusive language not only respects cultural and linguistic diversity, but also the needs of those who may have disabilities or different understanding abilities.

Public administrations are at the center of the daily lives of citizens. Ensuring that communication is accessible is a fundamental step towards building an inclusive and participatory society. Creative Intelligence has placed accessible, broad and pervasive communication at the center of its business practice, for itself and its customers and has made it a mission. In January 2024, for the Apulian municipality of Martina Franca (TA) CI provided a three-day training course on inclusive communication, as part of a PNRR loan, aimed at interventions for accessibility and inclusion in the “Isidoro Chirulli” municipal library.

Methods and techniques were presented to allow cultural operators to provide correct information in various areas, guaranteeing equal access and full and inclusive use, involving staff in the communication challenge of our time and providing the necessary tools to face and overcome it.

Journalist Maria Pia Anna Garrinella led the course, bringing her experience and expertise in the field of inclusive communication. With a practical and engaging approach, the course covered various aspects, from guidelines for inclusive writing to best practices in designing accessible materials and contexts. Particular emphasis was placed on the choice of words and good practices that are respectful of diversity and disabilities, from the creation of subtitled videos to the correct declination of the various public positions in both genders (avoiding the overextended use of the masculine). Creative Intelligence is committed to supporting public administrations in their journey towards increasingly accessible communication.

Looking to the future, we intend to continue working with other institutions to spread awareness of the importance of open communication and contribute to creating a society that gives voice to plurality and individual specificities, enhancing them.
